Thirsk based, husband and wife team, Jon and Alison Trenholme will be jetting off to compete in Rally Barbados next month, with Todd’s behind them all the way.
Starting out in rallying in 2011, Jon started in his Vauxhall Corsa before realising the slightly small and slow implications, switching to a Subaru Impreza rally car.
2012 was the debut for the car, as well as the debut for the husband and wife team (with Alison sick of being a rally widow). Alison said, ‘Even Jon rolling the car on the second rally didn’t put me off’.
Starting out on single venue events, such as:
- The Christmas Stages at Croft
- The Phoenix Stages at Fulbeck
The rally dream team wanted to try more challenging races, embarking on a number of a multi venue events, such as:
- The Cheviot Stage Rally at Otterburn
- The North West Stages Rally – picking up the award for Best Novice Crew
2013 saw 5th place for Jon and 3rd place for Alison in the North East Tarmac Championship, and in 2015 the couple won the mixed use challenge in the ANCC Championship.
The couple have said that they’re rallying is relatively low budget compared to a lot of competitors, but feel they bring in some decent results regardless, with the collection of a few awards and some crystal ware in the limited time rally driving.
Organised by the Rally Barbados Motor Club, Rally Barbados attracts over 100 entrants each year with nearly two-thirds from overseas. Seen as one of the biggest events in the Caribbean, it is expected to attract over 20,000 people.
Having watched Rally Barbados twice (2015 and 2016), and it being Jon’s 50th Birthday celebrations, the husband and wife rally team decided to make the plunge and enter this year’s event.
The car will make the trip over on a banana boat, taking to the seas on 25th April, not expecting to arrive till 20th May. The couple will make the trip over on 24th May, with the first event being held 27th May. The first event is a chance for the spectators and other competitors to meet the drivers and get to view all the cars. With the first race being the following day – The King of the Hill – a hill climb consisting of 4 passes of Hangmans Hill.
The main event – Rally Barbados – will take place 2-4th June, following a week of recces and pacenote drafting.
Congratulations to Alison and Jon, who finished 32nd overall from a field of 80+ competitors!
